PLAYTYPE 8: OMBRE GLAD BAKE

For this play type I was inspired by Dauphinette NYC one of my communities of practise and the way she transforms fabrics using hand painted techniques. I had some old fabric scraps of leather that I wanted to up cycle as a base for my trash embellishment. I had some left over Derivan Fabric Art Paint which is an Australian made water-based, non-toxic paint for fabric. I wanted to explore a material base that had a playful aesthetic instead of going out to purchase any new fabric. Our household was throwing out a Glad wrap box at the time that matched the colours of the fabric paint which was a win. I cleaned the surface of the fabric and prepped it for painting as it had been sitting in my fabric scraps for a while now, so I was excited to give it a new life.

These garments are what inspired me to up-cycle my fabrics using hand painted techniques for my embellished playtypes and exploration.

The fabrication is a Faux Leather Fabric that has a fun texture and a soft touch and delicate feel.

After prepping the fabric I painted the yellow water based fabric paint using thick organic brush strokes

I then left a small gap and applied the orane fabric paint, again using organic thick brush strokes.

After I repeated this process using pink fabric paint and then got a large flat paint brush and ran it through the paint from top to bottom to achieve an ombre effect.

I then used fabric chalk to stencil out the text "Choose to Reuse" so that it was centred in the fabric and ready for embelishment.

To create the sequins I used a whole puncher using the yellow sections of the Glad Wrap Box. I then threaded the cardboard sequin through and pushed it down onto the face of the fabric.

Following the prior step I threaded a seed beed through and then went around the seed beed and down the same hole to secure the sequin into place.

I continued this process in rows of two.

To create the orange ombre sequins I hole punched the gald bake box where the colours were turning ombre from yellow to orange, so that it would cohesively work with the fabric paint I had painted down.

To create the pink sequins I used a Cheese and Bacon shapes box that I sourced from my babysitting family.

I then continued to secure the pink sequins down with a pink seed bead that formed the word "Reuse".
